IKO Dynasty vs. IKO Nordic: Class 3 or Class 4?

A spec-by-spec comparison of IKO Dynasty and IKO Nordic: impact class, wind and algae warranties, the ArmourZone, colors, and which one is right for your roof.

By Northvale Roofing · Published

We standardize on IKO, and the choice we walk almost every homeowner through is the same one: IKO Dynasty or IKO Nordic? They share most of their DNA — the real fork is impact resistance and what it can do for your insurance. Here’s the comparison straight from IKO’s published specs, no embellishment.

What they share

Both are premium laminated (architectural) shingles built around the same core engineering, so a lot of the spec sheet is identical:

  • The ArmourZone. Both use IKO’s reinforced 1¼-inch nailing band — a wider, tougher target that resists the wind uplift that peels ordinary shingles.
  • 130-mph limited high-wind warranty when installed to IKO’s requirements.
  • Limited Lifetime product warranty, plus Iron Clad Protection — the first 15 years are full, non-prorated coverage for manufacturing defects.
  • 10-year algae-resistance warranty against the blue-green streaking that Gulf-Coast humidity causes — the same Gloeocapsa magma ARMA calls the most prevalent cause of roof discoloration in the Gulf states.
  • Class A fire rating (ASTM E108/UL 790) over an approved deck.

So on wind, warranty length, algae, and fire, it’s a wash. The decision comes down to one spec.

The real difference: impact class

IKO Dynasty is UL 2218 Class 3. IKO Nordic is FM 4473 / UL 2218 Class 4 — the highest impact rating there is. Nordic earns it because its mat is polymer-modified (SBS) asphalt: the shingle flexes like a shock absorber instead of cracking, which is exactly what you want under Montgomery County hail.

One piece of honesty IKO states plainly, and so do we: the impact rating is a lab classification, not a guarantee against hail — and hail damage isn’t covered by the shingle warranty. Its practical value is that a Class 4 roof can help you qualify for an insurance premium discount where your carrier offers one. The Texas Department of Insurance notes Class 4 coverings receive the highest available credit, but every company sets its own amount, so ask yours what a Class 4 roof would save you each year — that number is usually what decides it.

Colors

Dynasty comes in the widest IKO palette — 15 published colors, from Granite Black and Sentinel Slate to Cornerstone Weatherwood — so it’s easy to find a muted shade your village design-review committee will approve. Nordic offers a focused set of six (Olde Style Weatherwood, Granite Black, Shadow Brown, Summit Grey, Glacier, and Driftshake). If a very specific color is driving the decision, Dynasty gives you more room; if you’re set on maximum impact protection, Nordic’s six are all Standards-friendly.

So which one?

  1. Do the insurance math first. Call your carrier and ask what a Class 4 roof credits you per year. If the annual discount is meaningful, Nordic often pays for its upgrade over the life of the roof — see our Class 4 breakdown.
  2. Weigh your hail exposure. Heavily hail-hit stretch of Montgomery County? Nordic’s shock-absorbing mat is built for it.
  3. Then look at color. If a specific shade matters most and hail/insurance are secondary, Dynasty’s wider palette wins.
