What Wind Rating Should I Buy Near Houston?

Decoding ASTM D3161 and D7158 wind classes, what Houston-area storms actually deliver, and which shingle wind warranties are worth specifying.

Shingle packaging is a fog of class letters and mile-per-hour numbers, and most of it goes unexplained at the kitchen table. Here’s what the ratings actually mean, what wind our storms actually deliver north of Houston, and how to buy a roof that’s built for the next storm, not the last one.

Decoding the ratings on the wrapper

ASTM D3161 is a fan-driven wind test lasting two hours. Class A means the shingle held at 60 mph, Class D at 90 mph, and Class F at 110 mph — the top tier, and what you should expect from any serious architectural shingle sold here.

ASTM D7158 is a newer uplift-based method with Classes D, G, and H — Class H is the highest. The residential code (IRC Table R905.2.6.1) maps your area’s design wind speed to the class of shingle allowed, which is why these letters aren’t just marketing — they’re a code-compliance item.

UL 790 also shows up next to these, but don’t confuse it: that’s the fire rating (Class A is best), not wind.

What our storms actually deliver

Ratings only matter measured against reality, so here’s the local record:

  • The NWS counts 50–60 thunderstorm days per year in Southeast Texas — roughly a third of them severe — with downbursts capable of 60–100+ mph. That’s the routine threat, not the headline hurricane.
  • Hurricane Beryl (July 8, 2024) made landfall near Matagorda as a Category 1 with 80-mph winds; measured gusts reached 69 mph at Conroe, 83 mph at Intercontinental, and 84 mph at Hobby (NWS Houston/Galveston).
  • The May 2024 derecho was the sobering one: NWS surveys estimated winds around 100 mph through parts of downtown Houston — thunderstorm winds, no hurricane required. (That was a Houston-metro event; the official storm database doesn’t record those extremes up in Montgomery County that day.)
  • Closer to home, NCEI’s Storm Events database logged estimated thunderstorm winds of roughly 75–78 mph in southern Montgomery County on May 26, 2025.

So the realistic design case near Houston is repeated 60–100+ mph thunderstorm wind over the life of the roof, with an occasional tropical system on top. A 60-mph-class shingle has no business here; even the 110-mph D3161 Class F test is a two-hour lab snapshot, not a 20-year guarantee.

The part nobody puts on the wrapper: the seal

IBHS research is blunt about wind mechanics: sealant bond strength is the key factor in whether shingles stay on. Wind failure starts with uplift — the shingle lifts, creases, or tears — and IBHS also found that shingle wind performance declines with age. Two consequences for buyers:

  1. A top-rated shingle installed badly — nails high, seal strips contaminated, cold-weather install that never bonded — performs like a bad shingle.
  2. A 17-year-old roof that “still looks fine” is measurably weaker against the next derecho than it was against the last one. If yours took a hit, get it looked at — that’s what our storm damage service exists for.

Wind warranties: the number that’s actually enforceable

Lab classes are pass/fail tests. Warranties are promises with conditions, and the conditions are where buyers get burned. Here’s the coverage on the IKO shingles we install:

  • IKO Dynasty & Nordic: a 130-mph limited high-wind warranty — but only when the shingles are installed to IKO’s application requirements, which lean hard on the reinforced ArmourZone nailing band and a properly sealed starter course at the edges.
  • The edges matter as much as the field. Most wind failures start at the eaves and rakes, so a purpose-made starter strip (IKO Leading Edge Plus) sealing those wind-driven zones is part of earning the coverage, not an upsell.

Nailing patterns: cheap insurance

Fastening is the other half of wind resistance. Standard application is typically four nails per shingle; high-wind specs call for enhanced fastening per the manufacturer’s application instructions. Some local authorities mandate it outright — the City of Shenandoah’s published residential roofing rules require a six-nail pattern rated for 110-mph three-second gusts, with ASTM D3161 Class F or G shingles. Six nails per shingle costs little on a full replacement, and we think Shenandoah has the right idea for the whole area.

So what should you buy?
